CFL multimodal develops intermodal network with the support of ING Bank

Financed through leasing by ING Luxembourg, the 50 new wagons will enable the CFL multimodal group to expand its intermodal network in Europe

At a time when several European countries are banking on huge lorries of 25 metres plus, Luxembourg is promoting the transfer of cargo transport to rail and intermodality, i.e. the combination of rail with road and river transport. The recent purchase of 50 intermodal wagons is part of this approach, and represents a new and important step in the modal shift from road to rail.

The CFL multimodal group’s freight activities include a range of services covering the whole multimodal logistics chain, from wagon maintenance to customs agencies. This purchase of 50 cars specifically enables the development of the combined rail transport business, with the new wagons having been designed for the transport of semi-trailers by rail. The objective is to increase the frequency of intermodal connections departing from the Bettembourg-Dudelange terminal to Europe’s main economic centres, thereby offering the market high-performance and more environmentally-friendly transport solutions.

Made in Slovakia, the new “T3000 double pocket” wagons will be equipped with sensors providing GPS location data that will be made available to customers and suppliers on a web portal, to enable them to monitor the cargo in real time.

The use of a finance lease for this major acquisition once again shows how this flexible method of financing, adapted to companies’ needs (100% financed, fixed lease payments and duration reflecting the usual useful life of the asset) is possible for all purchases of capital equipment, practically without size restrictions. This transaction cements the relationship between ING and CFL in the long term and within the framework of sustainable development, facilitating the transport of cargo in a way that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and traffic pollution, without however sacrificing performance.

A major player in finance leasing for 30 years, ING Luxembourg is very proud to be a part of this strategic financing for the freight activities of CFL and even for the Grand Duchy as a whole.
